John,
Don't even think about using anykind of welding gas in your basement. Too
many things can go wrong. If you have a leak, a spark can send you and
your apartment into orbit.
Oxy/ace gets up to approximately 5900-6100 degrees. Mapp (methylacetylene
propadiene) gets up to approximately 5130 to 5301 degrees and is used for
cutting, heating, brazing and metallizing; rarely used for welding.
Propylene gets up to approximately 5193 degrees.
You will have to buy your torches and lines. Victor and Harris (Lincoln
Electric)make good units. Unless you will be doing a heck of a lot of
welding, you will probably be better off to buy your tanks. If you rent
tanks, in three years you have paid enough in rent to buy a set of tanks.
The tanks that you purchase are a little smaller than the tanks you rent.
My welding supplier swaps out my purchased tanks, therefore they maintain
and test them.
If you want more info, contact me off list.
