[TheForge] Fire pot depth - opinions wanted

I know this has been touched on already but I prefer a clayed table with a
shallow 2" deep duck's nest and a pile of fire brick to control the fire's
size and shape.

If I want a long narrow fire I have a short 2"+/- piece of 2 1/2" pipe with
a welded cap on one end and 1 1/2" holes drilled in opposition near the cap
and two 1/2" holes in the cap aligned with the ones in the sides. I use it
by placing it open side down over the air grate, aligning the holes with a
trough made of fire brick. This works okay but now that I'm going to be able
to do some more smithing I'm going to try making one with a 2" pipe "T" and
legs of capped and perforated 2" pipe for the grates in the brick trench.

Anyway, I find the clayed table and fire brick arrangement to give me the
most flexibility and economy.

Wrought iron is.
