FWIW, I've had the best luck in gold leafing anything
(metal, wood, glass, my fingers, my face around the gas mask, <G>
etc) by putting a light coat of thinned polyurethane on the object,
apply the leaf to that (blow for dust or tap for paper), let dry 4
hours and then put a couple of coats of clear poly over that.
Lasts almost ten years on routed wooden signs exposed to
the elements that way.
