Norm Larson and I are putting a couple of computer driven, stepper motor
machines together. We're at the stage of having a functional prototype,
working on an improved machine. Off the top of my head (dangerous
territory), I think we spent less than $500 on the hardware and about
the same on software. $600-800 all told. Note, this is with dutiful
scrounging and some knowledge of electronics.

Functional means that the table moves when the computer tells it to, it
just moves a little more than intended. Squares have divots on the
corners, circles are elliptical--some slop in the system. Looks like the
electronics works ok, need to tighten up the mechanical parts.
