Terry,

Dave described the making of  wire rope, which we often just 
call  "cable".   Some of the old rope booklets for these antique rope 
making machines tell how to make your own "lightning  rods" this way from 
copper wire.  I made some shorter wire ropes from salvage wire 14 
gage  copper from old runs of romex wire.   Dave brown had another good 
thought:  It would make  nice decorative handles.  Some could be varnished 
or clear painted to keep the copper color.    Perhaps a tin smith would tin 
it?

The point that Dave was making>  the first set of yarns/ wires /rods are 
twisted one direction.  When they are twisted a 2nd time into rope, they 
are twisted the opposite direction.   Typically this is "clockwise" 
twisting  yarns into the rope strands, and counter clockwise laying  the 
rope strands up into rope.
