There a couple of guys in portland oregon, I think, Israeli Russians, who
spent a lot of time in japan apprenticing. there was just an article about
them in either the anvils ring or maybe the nwba magazine, hot iron. One of
them is much more arty, the other more traditional, and I think he
apprenticed as a toolmaker. Anyway, if I dig up the article I will post the
names, but I am sure if you could find out who they are, they would be happy
talk to you about westerners living in japan and studying smithing.
Even though I stubbornly reinvent the wheel over and over again, it really
is easier to talk to someone who has already done it...
