hello;

many years ago i worked at fermi national lab.
worked in the 15 ft bubble chamber area. at that
time that bubble chamber had a superconducting magnet with
a magnetic field 44000 times the earths. could not wear
anything metal when the magnet was up and running. safety
shoes where made of copper-berylium. tools were all copper-berylium.
zippers would attempt to align with the magnetic field.
having buttons was a definite advantage. that was during the
infamous search for that elusive monopole magnet.

the 15 ft bubble chamber was filled with 15,000 liters of
liquid hydrogen. the hydrogen, nitrogen, and helium compressors
were all within the magentic field. could not run the chamber too
long because the compressor cylinder walls would become oval from
the pistons and connecting rods being deflected by the magnetic field.
the hydrogen compressor crankshaft was replaced numerous time because
it was bent from the magnetic field.
