There are a lot of steam engines out there jst kike this.  It is called 
an oscillating engine officially, or sometimes "a wobbler".   Large 
steam engines solved the unbalanced thrust issues with the crosshead. 
 It was simply a slide the length of the cylinder, which had a short 
link at the end that converted the reciprocating linear motion into 
rotational.
