Lynn,
Actually many of today's naturally aspirated burner designs are
extremely fuel efficient. They yield complete combustion over a wide
range of firing rates. My burners run stable from less than one psi to
well over 25 psi, although I usually never need to run them more than 10
psi. Due to the small orifice the gas consumption is relatively low at a
given pressure compared to an open pipe.
With the proper design and tuning an atmospheric burner can achieve a
neutral primary flame with nearly complete combustion. This minimizes
any excess air and CO in the exhaust gases. The result is higher
combustion temperatures, less scaling, and more usable heat per pound of
fuel.
The debate on blower vs naturally aspirated has been hashed over many
times here already. Some folks prefer there forges with blowers and some
don't. Some will only use coal. They all make iron hot. What ever makes
life more enjoyable is great.
