Horsepower ratings are meaningless, but you can get some insight into the
manufacturer's ethics in labelling by comparing the rated amps to the rated
horsepower.
Multiply the rated amps by 120 and divide by 746 to get the theoretical
horsepower.
Here's what I've found. Major "quality" manufacturers like Ingersol-Rand
work out very close. Cheapo manufacturers like Campbell-Hausfeld typically
have volt-amp numbers that are close to 5hp on motors that they label as
7hp. Sears equipment has similar false ratings. Also note that the CH
compressors are usually diecast potmetal and the motor hp ratings have "SP"
after them. The SP appears to indicate that the hp rating is less than real.
