If you notice the smaller motors have "grown" lumps. They are starter 
capacitors to handle the necessary in rush currents. The older motors 
had plenty of copper in them to handle the in rush currents. Less 
copper, smaller motor, less first time cost, shorter mean time to 
failure. Look at motor load factor when buying new motors. You can still 
get a pretty decent new motor as long as you buy one with a high load 
factor, at least 1.0, 1.15 even better.
