Dan,
I think you are right on. It's all in how you see yourself how you 
present your work. I raised the question because it is one I wressle 
with regularly. I do original sculpture. Some sells, some doesn't. I do 
commissioned furniture, wrought iron railings, and some "cut and paste" 
for people who trust me, like my workmanship and I am affordable. I have 
people who call me an artist, and I do not correct them. I have people 
who call me a craftsman, and I tell them I am working up to that name. I 
guess it's all in the pursuit of life's answers.

I have previously referenced the occasion of Akira Kurasowa receiving 
his lifetime achievement award from Academy of Motion Picture Arts and 
Sciences. He was introduced as a great artist, and he humbly accepted 
the award, saying something to the effect of , I am still learning the 
craft and maybe one day I will deserve this recognition.
