This is similar to what I do. I weld a piece of sheet in the bottom to get a flat
surface to work from. Then I put down some thin insulating firebrick (the pure
white ones, not the ones from boilers), and pour a fireclay floor over the top.
Filling the bottom with fireclay would work, but you will need to heat all that
mass, and its heavy.
