I think that great minds think alike.  I did just what you suggest this 
past weekend, and for exactly the same reasoning, except that I used a 
freon tank not a water tank.  Pictures available on request.  One thing I 
did wrong ... for me it was an afterthought and I had the Kaowool in place 
and trimmed back to where the refractory would fill.  I left the Kaowool in 
place when I put the floor in.  Should have taken it out. and laid the 
floor first.
