I'm trying to post this for the 3rd time. The first two have not gone
through to the list. It's a reply to comments about the "high" price of the
2002 ABANA conference.

The conference registration fee is pretty typical of previous conferences.
They always go up a touch, just like prices do.
I hope that if you do spend the $200something bucks to attend, that you
don't just walk around. I hope that you take notes, take pictures, talk to
the demonstrators, ask intelligent pertinent questions, find inspiration in
the gallery work, and learn a lot of incredible information. I hope that you
take the opportunity to view over 7 Japanese bladesmiths, a Ukrainian smith,
many European smiths including Angelo Bartolucci of Italy, and others.

I love the regional conferences too, but I'll never see this kind of lineup
at a regional conference. $90 bucks won't buy me a plane trip to Europe or
a tour of the shops, so I think I'd rather come to the LaCrosse conference,
even for one day. Thank goodness these conferences only happen once every
two years so I have time to save up a little money to attend.

If you go to conferences just to socialize and tailgate, then stick to the
lower priced conferences. If you want a high quality educational
opportunity, think about spending the money on the 2002 conference in
LaCrosse.

I'm due to have another baby on June 2nd, so I'm doing all of this prep and
don't expect to actually attend the conference. I'd rather have the baby,
but I'll really miss seeing Adolph Steinus (repouss master from Germany)
and Angelo Bartolucci (the Italian who forged those great flowers from one
single piece of iron). Send them over to my house if they look bored while
they are walking around the conference.
