Whatever works is fine Bruce. That's one of the interesting things about a gathering of smiths; 10 folks have 10 ways to do the same thing, each persons way is the "right" way, and we each get the results we
want.
I just checked one of my unfinished pieces (handle not finished) and the space down the middle of the screw is 1/8" + a hair. I do mine in the way I described because that is the way I learned. The use of a
mandrel didn't occur to me until the question was asked here.
As far as quenching, I have only used water, since I started doing these before we knew how to make SQ.
