[TheForge] Blacksmith Guilds possibly no more

Never did see an answer to this and it DIDN'T seem to be a rhetorical
question...
I have not made a corkscrew yet, nor have I watched anyone make one, but I
would start with really thin stock... maybe 1/8" or even possibly some
welding rod of whatever diameter you think would be appropriate. Then
point one end, get a heat as far back as you want the metal to bend and
wrap around a 1/4" rod. You can spread it out as you go, or make a more
solid coil and stretch it afterwards. The tricky part, I would think is to
make the handle. The easiest handle I can think of is to bend the wire
back and forth several times to make the handle shaft. Loop the ends
around a seperate cross piece (maybe 3/16"??) that will give you leverage
to turn the corkscrew. You can fuller a groove in the cross piece or drill
a hole and thread one strand of the shaft through it. Or just weld it on
with your favorite method. You probably ought to weld the bottom of the
handle shaft as well. You could even twist the handle to make it a little
prettier. If you do twist, make sure you twist in the same direction that
the screw would go into the cork. (Usually to the right, unless you made a
left-handed corkscrew!!!) :)
You might check with Peter Fels who is on this list... he has made some
interesting ones!!! See: http://www.peterfels.com/corkscrw.htm
