In the book: "Blacksmiths' and Farriers' Tools at Shelburne Museum" by H.R.
Bradley Smith on page 193 there is a picture of this type of vise and a
description of its use. Here it is called a Shoe Calking Vise and Bolt
Header. According to the text it was used for 3 operations: 1. Sharpening
the blunt toe calks afar they were welded onto the shoe; 2.welding sharp toe
calks onto the shoes; 3.making the head on iron for bolts.
I have seen a number of these and they seem that they would be very handy to
have, especially if you need to upset the ends of round bar. The very few
that I have seen for sale, have generally been in the $300+ price range.
