Sounds like you did fine. The black is a patina, that is added after the
fact. Comes in a bottle. Check out stained glass web sites.

Subject: [TheForge] After the fact soldering advice, please
My niece brought me an approximately 25 lb stained glass piece that had one
of the soldered on brackets broken off during transport from one house to
another. I don't know much about soldering, but I used some found on the
side of the road rosin core solder and some non-corrosive flux paste in the
yellow tin (the top of this tin had corroded almost away) and after grinding
off the old solder reattached the bracket. Question, should I have done
anything differently and how can I replace the fine black finish that was on
the bracket, the solder, and the brass u-channel that made up the perimeter
of the piece. The black seemed like a treatment more than a paint as it
was very thin and uniform.
I gave it the jerk on it several times hard test after it cooled and it
seemed to be fixed. I wonder if I'm ready to hang out the solder repairs
cheap sign on my mailbox?
Thanks again,
Jeff Valentine
