Metcals are extremely nice, but for most people they aren't cost
effective to buy new. Keep an eye out for a working power supply at a
hamfest or swap. I wouldn't buy one on eBay unless it is guaranteed
working. (Repairing a broken power supply is maybe 50/50.) Used tips
on eBay are cheap enough to take a chance. Metcal drawbacks are
non-adjustable temperature, and fairly limited tip life.

While you're waiting for a Metcal, the cheap Chinese stations are
really good enough. I recently bought a Eumax hot air station on eBay
for $70, and the iron built into that is fine. Tips and heater
elements are dirt cheap. If you want something a little nicer,
Xytronic is a good brand, or of course Hakko.
