For John:
I don`t know the meter but if its like the triplett transistor tester I just
took apart and cleaned, theres scres with nuts on them to hold to the case.
After taking the nuts off,the screws STILL have nuts up to the meter case
,so you`d have to take those off to get inside the meter.
I don`t know if any of the manufacturers made a VOM type meter that way or
not.
My Eico 555 is like that.
1.Take cover off meter.
2.Make sure the meter wires are disconnected now.
3. Look and see if the meter screws have a nut still on them at the meter
case back.
4. If so,Take those off.
5. Being VERY CAREFUL,pull the meter guts out of the meter case.
NOTE:This exposes the meter guts so BE CAREFUl,go slow,or you`ll prob wind
up doing something to the meter.

I don' recall whether the EICO 249 meter cover can be easily
removed. I vaguely think it is, but am far form sure. Seems to
me a simple visual examination should answer this question.
In any case, if you decide to open it up, be absolutely sure
it's done in as clean an environment as possible (this
includes the air in the room).
Good luck,
-- Ron
