Must admit I hadn't considered your first option and would need to think  
about that one too.
 
It was the second one that seemed to me very promising but perhaps too good 
 to be true, just adding more DM modules and extending the resolution ad  
infinitum seems like a great idea but I'm not sure whether or not that  might 
just be looking for the proverbial non existent free lunch:-)
 
I've decided to take some pdf PTS manuals away with me and will  take a 
look through those if I get the chance, always assuming I'm allowed  to sober 
up enough to do so:-)

That will  produce the 14.000000 to 1.999999 MHz needed to go into the 
first decade  module.
