I might add that I also used to perform relay testing and adjustment on
the "old" GE, Westinghouse, and other makers of the electro-mechanical
relay for power plants and transmission systems.
We were using the TS-51 test sets by Multi-Amp, that used an analog timer.
I've also used the MS-1 by the same company/corporation.
The purpose is "calibration" for proper function. You really don't want
the generators or transmission lines burning up or melting down.
Infrared testing is another realm I've participated in. Looking for
problem connections on HV/MV/LV distribution systems.
Open the cover on a steel enclosed, pad mounted transformer, and found a
VERY hot connection. Took my eyes off the IR scanner, looking down, I
observed a molten puddle of aluminum. It was hot enough to be glowing.
That merited an emergency call to the repair crew!
Might this constitute "non-destructive" testing of electrical/electronic
devices?
