Which Suffix does your 1503 have? My 1503C does not have a panel "Zero 
Ref" knob.
Even without a "zero" set point you should see a trace on the screen. If 
you see the trace shift your Horizontal position control clockwise and 
look for the "0" pulse.
If no trace is present start by checking voltages in the unit. Your 
manual should be sufficient for that task
I've worked on the B and C. I have not worked on the "original" run.
What installed options do you have?
