My experience with the early AIL's ended around 1980. I wasnt impressed as a
home brew 5722 had similar accuracy up to 2M and was a lot easier to use.
But I was still using 417A's back then. My HB W2AZL converter measured 2.4
dB with the 5722 and 2.2 dB 25 years later with the 8970A. I rarely throw
anything away!

As long as the new ones can compete with HP/Agilent and give equal readings
(unfortunately the HP is the standard) they will sell.
