Here are 2 PDF files showing how I constructed an electronics test bench
and a ham/shortwave radio equipment station. They have been in use for over
15 years:

and

Both employ adjustable steel shelving I bought surplus. Each setup uses
a pair of 2-draw file cabinets to support a work surface.
One setup uses a solid wood door as a work surface which steel shelving on
top. I bought the door at discount from a Menards home center store because
it had a scratch. The shelving supports a lot of heavy test equipment.
The other setup, named eq-shelves.pdf, shows a self-supporting array of
adjustable steel shelving which stands on the floor, with a narrow homebrew
work surface in front of them. Though the drawing shows 2 sets of shelving
bolted together, I actually added a 3rd set of shelves to the lineup. I
built the work surface by nailing hardboard to a couple of pine planks and
nailing trim around front and 2 sides.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
