>Anyone ever hear of/use this sweeper?
***Yes,it is a big heavy tube based boatanchor with various types of plug in
modules. Its main claim to fame was its different methods of driving the
sweeper plug in modules, the cheaper nastier ones used line frequencies to do
this, the SM2000 was fully variable as well as line frequency driven. It also
featured a "birdie bypass system" where the birdie was generated, amplified
and mixed with the main video signal inside the sweeper and was presented to
the display.
>I have a radio that the manual specifies this unit to do the alignment. I
was hoping I could do the alignment without having to acquire this item.
Could I accomplish the same results (getting a plot of the IF response)
using more common gear?? I have a rf sweep generator (with sweep ramp
output), a scope with XY mode.
***** You can use any sweeper you can lay your hands on that has the correct
centre frequency for your requirements.
>Anyone suggest an inexpensive detector (without having to build one) I am
interested in testing solid state and tube gear.
***** For standard IFs the detector can be little more than a good signal
diode and a small capacitor.Very easy to lash up.
>Does anyone know if the telonic had log output to drive the "Y" of the
scope?
***** No,it didn't use a log output.It used a buffered copy of the sawtooth
sweep frequency oscillator driver.
>Is this useful/necessary in sweeping filters etc? If so, could anyone
recommend a way to convert to log output and detect in a simple way so I can
use my sweeper and scope to get response plots?
***** You dont say what sweeper you have. Most sweepers have a Y drive for
the CRO .
The variable sweep frequency I referred to above is a necessity when
sweeping very sharp filters such as crystal ladders etc.
There is a need for a logarithmic detector if you want to examine the low
down skirts of an IF curve but this is not a function of the sweeper.
I just sold my SM2000 and replaced it with an HP8601,the difference is chalk
and cheese.
