As long as the gears and housing are metal, it's pretty straight forward.
Alcohol is not a good solvent for grease, BTW. Rubber cement thinner, mineral
spirits, Goof-Off, Tri-chlor, Xylene, or acetone are better choices. Careful
because most are flammable. Grease is not very soluble in alcohol.

A good light grease or Lubriplate does fine. I would avoid silicone greases and
ones containing graphite.

If the gears are plastic, all bets are off. Some oils and greases as well as
solvents destroy plastic, either at once or over time.
