Ron, this is a SWAG based on very dim memory so I may well be full of 
it.  Or more so than usual.  If you mean a sort of wire loop on a cable 
I think that was some sort of resonance detector, somewhat like a grid 
dip.  And that's IF I remember correctly what a 97 looks like.  Please 
advise how far off I was when you get the book.  ;<)  Nice toy though.
