Aha!  You've discovered a High Truth.  Consider who made the fat pin
plugs - Amphenol.  They also made the "octal" style 8, 9, 11 pin plugs
we're all so fond of for transceivers and such.  I think you'll find
that the 'pin' of the pin plug IS, in fact, an octal pin.

Trying to solder to a glued pin doesn't thrill me, but perhaps one could 
coax the tubular pin over a normal 0.080 pin plug and solder it on.  I 
suspect it would need some sanding-down of the solid pin, but it might 
work.  And it saves making a handle/insulator.

So now we have a couple of possible solutions.  "I love it when a plan 
comes together."
