The memories are a little hazy now.  When I was an undergrad a
few of us in the college radio club decided to give it a try.
The club had a Collins 75S-1 receiver and I remember carefully
tuning in W1AW for zero beat.  We had managed to borrow
the HP 5245L counter from the engineering supply room for 
our frequency reference.

The scary part about this is that among the equipment I currently
have for the upcoming test, the main frequency reference will
be my HP 5245L counter.  At least it will have a HP 10544 time base.
