Don, don't assume. Sorry, but the TM 500 series units MUST be used in a
Tektronix power module. It not only supplies various operating voltages
but also the series pass transistors for the regulated power supplies.
In other words the power goes in to the unit, back out, then back in again.
On the other hand, there are many useful units in the series and the
prices are getting rather modest these days. There are also several
power modules available at equally modest prices, from the 'one-holer'
TM 501 through through three, four, and five-wide (TM 515 covered
portable field unit), to the six-wide TM 506. The TM 504 and TM 506
have a high-power compartment for modules which need it, such as power
supplies. TM 5000 series mainframes will also operate TM 500 gear but
are unnecessary.
Note that while things look similar, TM 500 gear will not operate in Tek
5000 or 7000 series scopes.
The Tek TM 500 series instruments are very high quality industrial gear
but are complex and compact and use many custom parts. Correct manuals
(by serial number) are a must. Except for some of the scope cal units
taken over by Tegam, this gear has been out of production for a number
of years. Nevertheless there are many thousands of pieces both still in
service and available for parts, and Tek is still pretty good about support.
Best of luck,
Fred
