[TenTec] Omni C question

I can second that. I've only had one TenTec rig - my first HF rig (an Omni
D). It had been in nearly continous use by the original owner who bought it
new until I bought it in 2002. I used it for 6 years and sold it to another
ham who's used it extensively and still has it on the air.

In all that time, I had to replace one electrolytic cap on the SSB board,
and the bridge rectifier in the matching power supply (taken out when a car
hit a telephone pole 3 blocks from my house and crossed the 14kV lines when
the pole broke).

Note that the Omni C and D were designed to work with their current limiting
matching power supply. There's no SWR foldback, so if you don't use the
matching supply, you need to take other precautions - but mine never did
anything but pop the power off if I tried to tx into the wrong antenna.
Cycle the power (and get the right antenna connected) and they were "back to
normal" in seconds.

Hi Jeramy,
I've had at least one pc of TenTec gear continuously since abt 1975,
starting with my first Triton IV, incl. an early Argonaut, Omni-B, and
others, up to now, an Omni-V and another Triton IV.
I've had very little problem with any, I did buy a cupl that were in
need of work, and replaced a final or 2 in some of them. I've always been
impressed with the factory knowledge and willingness to help owners
troubleshoot, repair and even modify (some) their equipment. Only with my
2nd Triton IV did I come across the dial vernier's occasional need for
rebuild, and parts were readily available from the factory.
I wouldn't put money away in a spare parts rig unless it was very
cheap. As Jerry says, final xstrs might be nice to have, but if you watch
what you load into they might never be needed.
YMMV
