[TenTec] I am at the end of my rope. Can't seem to
findanexplanation for...

Dan,
I would invest in one of the popular antenna analyzers and check the
antennas for the resonant frequencies of the bands you operate. I live in
the country and have adequate space for single band antennas for the bands
that I operate. Remember that the multiband verticals or beams are
compromise antennas. You sacrifice bandwidth due the traps for using a
single radiator (antenna). When I build and erect an antenna, I use an
antenna analyzer for the fine tuning. When I have the antenna fine tuned to
my desired operating frequency, I develop a VSWR, impedance and operating
frequency chart. I date the chart and place the chart in my radio room. If
possible, I do not use an external or a built into the transceiver antenna
tuner. The tuners absorb RF power and I want the maximum transfer of RF
power to the antenna.
Also remember, most transceivers if they see a high VSWR (>2:1) will reduce
the RF power from the PA transistors. That is called a protection circuit
which is part of the transceiver RF section. My Yaesu transceivers have the
protection circuit.
Good luck with your project.
Best 73,
Bill Mills
