[TenTec] FCC rules, BPL, side effects (way way long)

Ladies and Gentlemen.
I have been on this list for a shade under three years. I rarely
post and have learned an immense amount simply by keeping my mouth
shut and listening. However, I feel that I must put my two cent's
worth in regarding the appropriateness of discussing BPL on the
TenTec list.
OK, here is the TenTec connecton:
If BPL is as disruptive as we suspect it will be, then we will have
difficulty using our TEN TEC radios on the amateur bands.
If BPL is left unchallenged, The interference to the bands used by
owners of TEN TEC and other radios will be terrible.
That good enough for ya?
This discussion should be going on everywhere, on every ham radio
list and in my opinion should be cross posted as much as possible.
We should be writing to every politician, every public safety
official, every FCC commissioner, the Department of Homeland Security
etc. etc. etc. There should be an groundswell movement within our
ranks to publicize the upcoming permanent disruption of conventional
radio communications in nearly every HF service.
Once this genie is let out of the bottle, ain't nooo puttin' it back in.
I am sorry that this sort of thing is offensive to some amateurs, but
we would be foolish and short-sighted to simply expect the FCC to
look out for our interests. With the refreshing exception of Riley,
the FCC is NOT our friend.
The FCC is solidly behind commercial exploitation of the spectrum as
evidenced by the spectrum auctions. Forget about public service and
public safety. As far as the commissioners are concerned, these are
covered by the police, fire, EMS and other similar users. We are no
longer viewed as creative innovators and emergency communications
experts, but rather as a bunch of cranky old farts who are trying to
preserve our private playground.
We argue about the relative merits of contesting vs. rag chewing vs.
DXing vs. satellite vs. vhf/uhf vs. moonbounce ad nauseum. We argue
about the relative merits of Yaesu, Kenwood, Icom and TenTec. We
might care, but let's face it - nobody else gives a rat's behind.
But they can't do that to us. Wanna Bet? Lets see... Arrl Vs. AOL.
Who do YOU think the FCC will listen to?
Our very existence as a service is on the line because our little
chunk of the universe is quite possibly on the verge of disappearing
into a fog of man-made interference, and we wonder about whether or
not it's appropriate for a particular list. To quote Dr. Phil..."GET
REAL!"
If the discussion offends you, set up a filter to dump anything with
BPL in the subject line. Or simply use the delete key.
P.S. Before venting your spleens at me, please read my SIG file.
