With all due respect, Larry, read the very bottom of your message and please
follow the rules, like the well versed old timer you are, and make your
postings in plain text. Thanks. I fall into this trap often myself, since
some interest groups Do accept rich text and are very useful for sending
illustrations. :-). I am sure your format was a rare error but thought it
worth pointing out.
What most of us ask of Ten-Tec is not rocket science. And most of us are
interested in reliable well-designed gear, not in becoming intimately
familiar with excellent service, although of course Ten-Tec service is tops,
and lasts for years, along with parts supplies.
I buy American myself and drive an American car, although it was one of the
last Fords built in Chicago, and even then, most of the parts in it were Not
made in the USA. Only the main rig in the ham shack right now is
non-US-made. I have fought with the I believe FORMER Ten-Tec chief design
engineer about internal fans and more than marginal power supplies, to no
avail.
The laptop I am using runs very hot due to its power. Thus it has a lot of
fans inside it. Fans to cool ham rigs should not be an option to install
externally like we did decades ago with Ten-Tecs.
I also complained about the display. I will continue to complain about it. I
do not have to open my own company, Larry, in my unexpected limited-income
retirement, to get these problems addressed by this very fine US company
which I have visited twice in Sevierville, noting with dispair the lack of
personnel compared with not that many years ago.
One more thought.. Try as they might.. son, this equipment is not your
father's or grandfather's Collins. For the price, it never will be. Bad
comparison there IMO.
The Orion is going through growing pains. I appreciate that. It WILL be a
real winner. I am confident of that. At this stage it is out of my price
range and will I fear remain that way.
The rest of you who may be better able to buy a great new rig at a decent
price, please support US companies like Ten-Tec and Elecraft. And talk with
the COMPANY about your ideas and concerns -- try not to knock them or
"reform them" on this reflector.
They won't listen to me any more about fans and colors etc. But then I was
pretty relentless and obstinate on the telephone about these items, and it
is their right to stand their ground on such matters, since they seem
convinced they are right and the Pacific Rim manufacturers are wrong on some
design features. For me, it meant saying goodbye. I owned Omnis and
Argonauts for years.
I HAD planned to sell off my Japanese rig and personally pick up my Jupiter
by appointment and bring it home myself. For me and the time I probably have
left, I get more from the Japanese rig and am, particularly as an almost
exclusively CW op and champion button-pusher and scrolling menu-reader,
getting almost as good QSK out of that as I get out of Ten-Tecs. Not as
good, but good enough for me, and full of filters much narrower than on the
Jupiter. I get high compliments on all my signals, and my ability to run
traffic nets, jumping frequencies in an instant to check on four or five
options before sending folks to a clear spot.. and it cannot be done with
any similar ease on the Jupiter.
That is simply a feature comparison. The CW QSK is inferior to ALL Ten-Tecs,
but good enough for my purposes. In most ways, I do not think I should feel
'stuck' with a non-US rig -- I like what I have, and cannot afford to switch
now. I accept that -- with some sadness however. Yes, I would prefer to see
that
Ten-Tec logo on that rig I am using. We all at some point have to make hard
decisions, most having nothing to do with ham gear.
That is what I have to say, and I do hope the message is easy to read and
not filled with misspelled words and incomprehensible thoughts. No hard
feelings, Larry, but your message did sorta pull my chain, even if it was
probably not addressed to me in particular. :-)

Gentlemen,
If 'CONCLUSION-JUMPING' was an Olympic Sport, many of you would now be GOLD
MEDAL WINNERS. Please, for the sanity of all readers of this and other
reflectors, READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY, USE SPELL-CHECKERS, AND STUDY THE
ENGLISH LANGUAGE...!
The word 'THERE' is NOT the same as 'THEIR'. Many of you, as indicated by
your callsigns, are mature adults and have used the English language most of
your lives. After all this time, don't you think that you might be able to
write a decent message that could be easily understood by everyone who
subscribes to this reflector...?
As for your comments and criticism of the manufacturer's design, prices, and
marketing practices, I invite the so-called 'experts' among you to start
your own business, design a product, market that product, and provide
continuous customer service for that product, all while competing with other
manufacturers that are large enough to engulf small countries! After you
have done that, THEN you will have earned the privilege of criticizing
Ten-Tec. (disclaimer: I AM NOT NOW, NOR HAVE I EVER BEEN A PRINCIPAL OR
EMPLOYEE OF TEN-TEC).
If you want an excellent example of American know-how and ingenuity, from a
company that is reminiscent of Collins, National, Hallicrafters, and the
multitude of American amateur radio manufacturers in years gone by, BUY
TEN-TEC... If you want a 'Rice-Box' appliance that comes with a warranty
and instruction manual written in six or seven different foreign languages,
go ahead, but don't expect anything like Ten-Tec's customer service, or
their one-on-one responses to your problems and concerns...
BUY AMERICAN, THE JOBS YOU SAVE WILL BE YOURS, YOUR CHILDREN'S, AND YOUR
GRANDCHILDREN'S. 'Yankee Ingenuity' is a reality, not a sales pitch... I
am a supporter of American industry, and the work ethic of its fine
crafts-persons.
Thank you for your time, your attention, and your understanding,
Larry Feldman, W1GOR
