Hello,
I have a great amateur radio public relations story to tell you about.
Thanks to an avid scanner listener at the Dallas/Fort Worth NBC
television station, the ARRL North Texas section will get the chance to
promote Amateur Radio to the general public in a big way. NBC5's Mike
Berry contacted me after learning about the ARRL while listening to a
local NTS traffic net on the scanner his wife gave him for Christmas.
Berry felt that Amateur Radio would be an excellent addition to NBC5's
2nd annual Technology and Lifestyles Expo in Dallas. So he offered booth
space at the event to the ARRL at no charge. This was, of course, a PR
opportunity that we could not pass up.
Working with a number of NTX ARRL affiliated clubs in the DFW area, a
plan was developed to have a presence at the Expo that would educate the
general public on the many aspects of Amateur Radio and perform some new
ham recruitment. The plan for the booth is to have three live operating
stations, multiple video/slide show presentations, literature tables and
several Hams that will answer questions. In addition, the Dallas ARC
Emergency Communications van will be the centerpiece for the booth and
should attract lot's of attention.
Bob Peters, W1PE, of QCWA Chapter 41 in Dallas was able to secure
special event station call sign W5D. So the operating stations should be
able to generate some activity on the bands. This will hopefully attract
the attention of booth visitors.
Of special interested to the Expo organizers is the Ham's involvement in
the Columbia shuttle recovery efforts. Doug Kilgore, KD5OUG of the
Richardson Wireless Klub has developed a presentation on the subject
geared toward the non-ham. The ARRL has been given a time slot in the
seminar area of the Expo and Doug will use that to present his program.
The NBC5 Technology and Lifestyles Expo will be held at the Dallas
Market Hall this weekend, September 27 and 28, from 10:00AM until
5:00PM. The event is free and is being heavily promoted by NBC 5. About
25,000 people are expected to visit the Expo over the two day event. The
shuttle recovery presentation will take place at 3:00PM on Sunday.
If you're in the area, why not stop by and visit the ARRL booth. It
would be a great way to introduce your non-ham friends to our wonderful
hobby and show off the good work being done by members of the Amateur
Radio Service.
You can get more information about the NBC5 Technology and Lifestyles
Expo on the Internet at the following web site address.
