Dale,

The 500cx uses a band-switched VFO that is mechanically coupled to the band
switch.  You probably noticed the VFO lever linkage attached to the band
switch shaft just behind the partition in front of the last band switch
section.  Did you also check the operation of the VFO linkage in the VFO
compartment on the top of the chassis?  It would also need lubrication.

Despite proper operation and good lubrication the band switch on the 500cx
is stiff.  I would compare it to the band switch on a Drake T-4XC that has
a 90 degree gear box for selecting the proper crystal.  It should not
require significant force, just a firm grip on the knob.
