Well, the match of the antenna to 50 ohm coaxial cable may not require a counterpoise.  However, the performance of the antenna will definitely improve considerably with the addition of radials.  Also, without radials there is a pretty good chance that the shield of your feedline is radiating which will definitely cause problems with RFI and electronic things in your house.

That's good advice about the lamp. As for the counterpoise: It has a wire in a square cinfiguration that goes around the bottom of the antenna. They call it a counterpoise but my understanding is that it is a 40 meter matching device??? I put no radials on it because they said none were necessary!
