[Swan] Re: My old 350

You want a do it all tube tester right?
The only one I can think of would be the newest transconductance type tester
you can find. The newer they are the more tube types they will cover in
that Swan. An older tester may not have the sweep tubes in it's menu of
tricks. A newer tube tester will also lop off alot of the older tubes types
that fell into disuse.
The ones with the widest range seems to be the military TV series and they
ain't cheap. Another thing to be aware of is that a tube testers are
generally not self-calibrating. Get one with a manual and calibrate the
supplies before use. The transconductance types have two separate DC power
supplies that need to work at the correct voltage levels in order to perform
a valid test. I wouldn't bother buying a emission type tester because it
basically tells you if the tube is passing current from cathode to plate.
If you turn the rig on and the tube lights up you're already half way thru
an emission tester!
On the other hand, if you have some spare tubes laying around, a good old
fashioned tube switch will pay off too.
I've fixed old Swans before and they are at the top of the list for popping
back to life and back on the air. Easy work. Swan really made good ones with
the 350 400 500 stuff. My swan stuff is a 350, Siltronix 10m, Atlas 215X and
Swan Mk2 2 kw linear.
