Dave,
Although early I am (almost) awake and will try to provide some useful
information! I originally owned the 22B VFO switch and 410C VFO. That
combination was used on my 500cx to permit split frequency operation. If the
410C is used without the 22B switch the internal VFO of the transceiver is
disabled and all frequency control is via the external VFO.
The more desirable 508 VFO was subsequently obtained which does, as you suspect,
include the functions of the 22B switch. I used the 508 on both a 500cx (I
still own) and 270B Cygnet (BTW, how do you like your "new" 270B?). It also
works on the 700cx and will work on the 350C if the accessory socket is
installed on the back of the transceiver. The 508 is the VFO to have. Since the
function switch is located on the front panel it is much more convenient to use
than the 410C/22B. Functionally, however, I have found the 508 is no better
than the 410C in terms of stability. Both are very stable.
Take a look at http://6mt.com/swan.htm. There are several versions of VFO as
well as other Swan gear listed. The 406 might be the VFO your father used in
his mobile.
Although I have owned or repaired a number of Swan boxes I have a lot to learn
about Swan gear. I'm sure others with far more Swan experience will be able to
provide you with additional information. Hopefully they will respond to the
list so all can read and learn.
