Hi, Bill--

The Standard name, at least, seems to have been bought by Yaesu, who now
offers 'Vertex Standard' (land mobile and air band) and 'Standard
Horizon' (marine radios) - you can find them all at
<http://www.yaesu.com> and select a company at the top right. Yaesu's
well-reviewed VX-nnn HTs seem to be adapted from the Vertex line.

As for repairs, I also have a C228A that has seem entirely too much
'belt time' and needs several things done. Someday...

I have collected two names:
Charles Turner, K6ARU in Lancaster left his card as 'Turner Radio' at
HRO Burbank, and (as of 7/04) claims to repair Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu "and
Standard too" per the HRO folks.

Matt Adrian KD8ZB in St. Joseph MI may still be doing Standard repairs
(found him through a search at ARRL.org plus some Internet updating of
area codes).

YMMV; I have yet to deal with either of these gentlemen, and have no
particular recommendation to make. Please do let us know what your
experience is if you do.

While none are made now by anyone, the C228A seems to be one of the few
dual-band 2m/220 HTs still hanging around (there was a little Icom some
ten years ago, that you needed a speaker-mic to hear IIRC, and now
there's the Kenwood 2/220/440 5W TH-F6A, and Yaesu's VX-6R, with only
1.5W on 220). There are still few 220 HTs at all; the Yaesu FT-33R is
one of the old solid simple workhorses, and mine is still alive somehow.

Battery packs for our Standards are still obtainable from several
vendors, as well as rebuilds by Grace, "The NiCad Lady" (find her at the
swaps in SoCal; TRW, etc.)

If you need a 2/220 antenna, you might try Smiley down by San Diego
(again, no experience, just a Web search so far...)

G'Luck with it; let us all know how it goes!
