John,
STANDARD did make a fine line of HT's, & most had very good front
ends. The problem was their price. I bought a new C558A from Lentini's & it
was over $500.
         I now have 5 standard HT's....two C508A's (for hamfesting & the
Mall), a C528A, a C228A & what I think is an uncommon model, the C288A.
The 288A is a 220 Mhz mono band HT.
These also sold for over $500 when they came out. I stumbled onto it while
searching eBay. It was listed under an oddball heading & had no bids. The
auction finished with no bids & I e-mailed the owner with an offer. He told
me it was from an estate & that he had some accessories. We agreed on a
price ($120 + shipping) & I got a check off to him. It arrived in PRISTINE
condition, not a mark on it. along with it were FIVE battery packs, the AA
battery holder, the 200 memory chip, the 40 memory chip, speaker mic, the
auto adapter & a CSA181 drop in charger! There ARE good deals to be had on
eBay!
Didn't have a manual with it & I'm STILL looking for one. Got one
for a C188A, same radio, but for 2M. Also have a spare as new C228A manual.
Anyone want to trade?

73,
bob
