Well, yes, any fixed length block of numeric, alpha, or alphanumerics
will obscure words, but there is a lot to be said for the ability to
write down short groups.  Most people can't handle a continuous stream
of digits etc.

Thats why the NPA ended up with NPA-NXX-XXXX (Area code, prefix, station digits)
