Most ham transceivers made since the 80's have general coverage receivers
from the kHz region through 30 MHz. Some of the newer ones go up into the
VHF region as well. Most have receive-only capabilities outside the ham
bands, which CAN be defeated by removing diodes or adding jumpers
somewhere. If you're not planning on transmitting, don't do those mods.

My TS-850 is not the newest radio but is known for its outstanding audio
quality. It still surpasses most other, even newer, equipment in this
regard. It has filters in it to attenuate the AM broadcast band; these were
installed to get around the problem of overload if you live near an AM
station. There is a mod to bypass/remove that attenuation. It makes an
excellent AM broadcast band DXing radio if you do that mod. I haven't had
any overload problems and I live 5 miles from an AM station.
