Hi Everyone:
=20
I=92ve been reviewing the Son of Sam thread with interest. I heard him =
last
night on 3700=97very clear.
=20
Being an engineer with some signal analysis experience, I was intrigued =
by
what some have described as =93hum=94 or =93buzzing=94 at the beginning =
of the
message.
=20
To my ear, the =93hum=94 sounded more like a square wave, rather than =
the hum of
a 60 Hz sine wave (as one might hear from a dirty novice transmission). =
So
I piped the signal into Spectrogram (a great program) to view the =
waveforms.
Expecting to see an orderly set of harmonics=97as one would see from a =
square
wave=97I was surprised by the uneven amplitude, frequency and apparent =
phase
distributions.
=20
I made several recordings of the signal within a period of about five
minutes. Each was different: Both in amplitude and frequency allotment. =
It
is clear (at least to me) that this signal is not being produced by =
random
noise from a novice transmitter, but rather that there is some =
information
encoded in the =93hum.=94
=20
I have little experience in identifying the signatures of digital =
modulation
techniques, but I can send the capture images to anyone who does.
=20
I acknowledge that each recording was subject to the speed of my finger =
to
react and record the sound. Hence, the differences I saw might be
attributed to the exact moment at which I initiated the capture of each
signal. Nevertheless, even if this is the case, the signal is markedly
different at each capture, again indicating an imbedded intelligence. I =
CAN
say with certainty that this signal is not 60 cycle hum.
=20
Some good minds are needed to analyze this enigma=85=20
=20
I do have a theory on what this is=85but I=92ll first wait to hear all =
of your
comments=85
