[Spooks] transistor set

when I was a kid I had a cheap battery powered
transistor radio. It used 2 AA batteries. I hooked up
a 9 volt to it (cause I do things like that). What
came from the radio was one of the most eerie things I
have ever heard (still remember quite clearly). Some
twenty years later when I first heard a dial up modem
start up it raised the hair on the back of my head. It
was virtually the same sound I had heard from the
radio. I remember it wasn't a quirk. It did it every
time I turned it on (better at night). If I remember
correctly there were approximately 20 broadcasts up
and down the dial, each similar but different. I would
listen for hours fascinated. eventually the radio got
broken and it was behind me (I was 10).
Has anyone heard of such a thing(I'm sure someone
has)? I recently was brought aware of the project
conet recordings and I was instantly reminded of my
childhood experiment. I had never heard of numbers
stations before(I've never even seen a shortwave
radio). Does anyone have any info?
I'm sure what I heard was not random interference
thanx
Fred
