Monsieur and Madame Thibault were the central figures in the French classes
I got in grade school, back in the 60's. It was the "Voix et images de
France" series, and it had filmstrips with records that went along with the
book.

After a while, you get the characters and situations mixed together, and
you start talking where the cat is, and you say it's at the beach -- it's
tall! (Ou est le chat? Au bord de la mer. C'est haut!) It was the CAT that
was supposed to be on the roof, not Monsieur Thibault. HE was at the beach,
not on the roof. It was all fun and games until you slipped at the French
restaurant and said "Je voudrais une CRAP," and everyone titters at
you...and Garçon was giving you the stink-eye and suggesting you might look
in "le salle de bain". (A kid did that when my high school French class
went into Chicago to visit a REAL French restaurant. He was the class
clown, and did stuff like asking the teacher how to pronounce the word for
"seal", the animal. The word, for your edification, is *phoque*, and is
pronounced close to what you would expect. Titter, titter.)
