[SOC] Is it designed to do this ?

I don't make coffee upstairs anymore...it forces me to interact with the family. But, being the creative genius that I am, I put my engineering hat on and came up with a plan. BTW: the hat is a bit tight these days. Anyhow, I built an alcohol burner from an old cat food can and a piece of rope from my 80-meter dipole for a wick. I heat water in a larger dog food can and pour it through an old sock (washed) filled with ground Brazilian "Second-Class Beans". They are pretty easy to smash into powder with a 5/8" box wrench. Ahhh, the aroma !!! Anyhow, it keeps me occupied whilst waiting for someone to answer my CQ's on 160 during the day.

Besides a Drip coffee maker, we also have a French press and an Espresso machine.

Fresh ground coffee is the best. Freshly roasted coffee is even better! :D
