My S38 has 5 tubes, 12+12+12+35+50 = 121, standard for the AC/DC radios
of that time and I had repaired
quite a few to friends & neighbors to support my habits at the time,
potato chips, Coke, ham gear and girls.
Oh, gas for my car when I hit 16.
My S38 is buried right now. I have a new A.C. cord ready to install on
it, but until I get it out, I cannot give
the actual tube line up, but probably 50L6, 35W4, 12SA7, 12SQ7, 12SL7
maybe were typical from memory.
As there were several versions from S38, S38A, S38B, S38C, etc. Early
ones used octal sockets, but later
ones used miniature pin tubes.
Biggest problem was the BFO injection signal was too low, especially for
a loud signal. I used to add a
"gimick" to increase the coupling and a "poor mans" Q-multiplier for
selectivity.
